We are students from BINUS University majoring in International Marketing (Yohanes Sidi, Giovanni Alexsander, Karen Hutama) who participated in the WOW Case Competition (Semen Indonesia) – Jakarta Marketing Week 2014 held by MarkPlus Inc.
It was a challenge for us at first to enter this competition, because the competition was held during our mid – term exam period in BINUS University. From 225 teams of participants from all over Indonesia, we managed to get into the top 24 teams and advanced to the stage of preliminary.
On the first day of the preliminary round we were asked to perform 3 minutes elevator pitch about our big picture strategy and marketing concepts that will be applied by Semen Indonesia for the next 3 years. From the first round we managed to go to the next round which was a debate competition for the top 16 teams in the following day. And followed by the video competition on the third day, which we won the top 3 best video.
We were really surprise when the judges announced that our team are going to the final round for this competition (Top 5). The theories of marketing and brand we learned from BINUS University, such as the umbrella brand, IMC, SWOT Analysis, Brand Management, Human Resource Management and many more helped us a lot to do the case analysis. In the final round, we were asked to do a presentation with the ‘ignite’ international presentation system, using 20 slides and only given 15 seconds for each slides which was all delivered in English. Indeed, nothing is ever worthless, 5 days in a row we were discussing and preparing presentations, preparing for the debate, editing the video, and was only able to sleep for 2 / 3 hours a day. But praise the Name of God , all the hard work paid off. In the end of this competition we won second place.
This competition really became a very precious experience for our team. We were very lucky to get a coaching clinic directly from the consultant of MarkPlus Inc. right before the final competition, where we were taught how to do the right analysis and structure our case presentations well. Besides that, we also got a lot of applicable theories about the world of marketing and the latest consumer movement from Mr. Hermawan Kartajaya himself.
We would like to thank our family and friends who have supported us from day one. To Mrs. Ina Melati thank you for helping us to structure the idea and last but not least, we would like to thank God for His blessings and Grace to let us win this competition.
Learn new things and develop yourself now! This is the right time for you to expand your knowledge and abilities through a variety of competition . Don’t miss your opportunity and grab your teams now!

It was an unforgettable experience, I learned a lot of new things from this competition. Besides the knowledge related to marketing, I also learned about good teamwork, how to solve problems, also about having confidence and how to present in front of people correctly. I am very grateful for the support from my family, friends, and lecturer who always encourage me to move forward . And I cannot wait to see what I can do next to represent BINUS University in the future.
(Karen Hutama, Class of 2011)
The competition was really challenging and fun at the same time. We had to work under pressure, but we managed to give our best. I learned how important team work is. Our team worked really well together and we supported each other. The mentoring session from Markplus was really insightful and helped us to learn how to implement the theories we studied in real situation. It was a valuable experience overall.
(Giovanni Alexsander, Class of 2011)
